Present Simple Tense is Actually About Facts and Habits

Did you know that Present Tense or Present Simple Tense is not about NOW or the CURRENT? There is another tense for that.

The Present Simple Tense has 2 major functions:

A. To Express Facts.
B. To Express Habitual or Repeated  Actions.

Examples of Facts:

1.  Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain.
2.  Prince George is the son of Prince William.
3.  I love ice cream!
4.  Henry works as an Engineer for General Motors.

Examples of Habitual Actions:

1.  Kate goes on vacation every August.
2.  She always buy her groceries on Thursdays.
3.  Father comes home only every week.
4.  I watch TV every night.

It is important always to add a time expression (like everyday, daily, monthly, annually) to habitual actions to establish consistency of the actions.

Grammar is About Relationships

Grammar is about relationships.  Subject-Verb relationship, Verb Tense - Time relationship, the right Prepositions, the right Vocabulary and so on and so forth...

Each part of the sentence has to mesh well with each other in order to make sense. We want to make sense, because we want to relay our message - because in learning another language, like English for example, what really matters most is to be able to communicate.

In recent years, the world has become a global village. And it becomes easier to travel to different places. Much more it is easier to communicate beyond boundaries...

Objectives

It is very important to have an objective in the learning process.  It defines progress and makes it measurable. It even carves the direction where we are heading.

So the questions usually are:

1.  Would I want to improve my subject - verb relationships (Tenses / Grammar).
2.  Or, is it more important for me to  construct a good sensible sentence.
3.  Or, perhaps I would rather want to improve my conversational skills.

You see, if one can not decide on an objective, learning English would be one huge maze. Later perhaps I will explain why.  But for now,  one has got to decide which skills are weak and needs improvement.

Starting Point

Beginnings are always difficult... I think everybody knows that. We face it with trepidation because the possibility of an unknown prospect is daunting. But a process is never complete without a starting point. And whether we like it or not, we are bound in this life to take the first steps.

Our journey will start here.
